Women's Golf Improves One Spot in Memphis
Sept. 17, 2002
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Samford's women's golf team, in the face of high winds and even higher humidity, shot a 325 Tuesday to finish in seventh place at the Memphis Women's Intercollegiate Challenge. Host-school Memphis won the event. The Bulldogs shot a cumulative 973, one stroke behind sixth-place UAB and three strokes better than Birmingham Southern. South Alabama finished with 1005 in ninth place. "It would have been nice to tie or pass UAB," coach Ian Thompson said. "But overall I am pleased with how we played. If you would have told me those were to be our scores before the rounds, I would have thought that it would not have been too bad. I am enthused about what we can do from here." Tricia Harlow shot a final-round 80 to finish in 25th place with a three-round total of 240. Kelly Stout finished in 26th place, firing a final round 82 for a total score of 243. Kelly Villarreal shot an 82 on Tuesday, good for 27th place (243). Sara Gossum's 84 placed her in a tie for 33rd (250) and Tara Clayton finished 40th with a final round 87 (258). The Bulldogs next compete at the Butler University Fall Invitational in Indianapolis, Ind., Sept. 23 and 24. "The Butler tournament will be the same format of three rounds in two days," Thompson said. "We will have experience with that schedule and should be prepared to play well."
