Women's Golf Finishes Fourth At Great Smokies Tourney; Sets 36-Hole Record

Sept. 16, 2008

CULLOWHEE, N.C. - The Samford University women's golf team set its second school record in as many days Tuesday as the Bulldogs carded a 36-hole mark of 588 at the 2008 Great Smokies Intercollegiate. The two-day event was hosted by Western Carolina at the par 72, 5,922-yard Waynesville Country Club.

"I am very pleased with how we performed this week," said Samford head coach Woodie Eubanks. "I think that we could have played a little better, but I'm still really happy with the huge improvements that this team has made."

With its second-round total of 297, Samford earned a fourth-place finish in the prestigious 22-team event. On Monday, the Bulldogs posted a school-record total of 291 en route to an early second-place position following the first round.

Western Carolina won the 2008 Great Smokies Intercollegiate by five strokes over fellow Southern Conference member, Wofford. WCU's two-day total of 578 ranked as the second-lowest round in tournament history. Wofford shot Tuesday's low round of the day at 290 to finish with a 36-hole score of 583.

Rounding out the top five were Tennessee Tech (586), Samford (588) and Winthrop (589).

Samford's Katelyn Stanier concluded the 36-hole tournament with 2-under score of 142. The Bulldogs' talented junior from Newnan, Ga., carded an even-par 72 on Tuesday for a fourth-place finish in the event.

Heather Arnold also tallied a solid score for Samford this week with a two-round total of 149 (76-73). The Bulldogs' junior from Lenior City, Tenn., carded a second-round mark of 73 on Tuesday.

Fellow junior Sara Hunt (71-79) and freshman Sarah Butts (75-75) both finished the tournament with final scores of 150, while senior Maria Troche ended the two-day event at 152 (75-77).

Belmont's Lorie Warren turned in the second-lowest individual 36-hole score in tournament history (138) with consecutive scores of 69 to win the 2008 Great Smokies Intercollegiate.

The Samford University women's golf team will next be in action Sept. 22-23, as the Bulldogs travel to Monroe, La., for the 2008 Louisiana-Monroe Golf Classic.
