Women's Golf Tie Kentucky For Fifth In Crimson Tide Classic

April 6, 2008

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. --- The Samford women's golf team wrapped up play Sunday in its final tournament of the spring season before the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament in two weeks. The Bulldogs finished in a tie for fifth place with the University of Kentucky after the final round of the Crimson Tide Classic at the Ol' Colony Golf Course in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The finish continues Samford's streak of not finishing below seventh place all season.

"Even though we didn't play as well as we should have, I'm very proud of our finish," Samford head coach Woodie Eubanks said. "We hung in there with some of the top teams in the country, but I feel a change coming on for this team and it will be interesting to see what we do next in the OVC tournament."

The Samford women shot a three-day total of 918 (304-309-305) to tie with Kentucky while host team No. 7 Alabama took the title by a landslide, finishing 42 strokes ahead of second place finisher No. 18 LSU while shooting three under par at 861. Ole Miss finished third, just three strokes behind the Tigers while OVC foe Jacksonville State took fourth place, finishing nine strokes ahead of the Bulldogs. Rounding out the rest of the field are South Alabama at seventh, Stetson at eighth, UAB at ninth, Murray State at tenth, Boston College at 11th and Troy at 12th.

Maria Troche led the Bulldogs Sunday, finishing in a tie for ninth place while shooting a tournament total of 225. She was joined in the top 20 by Sara Hunt who tied with two other players for 15th place, shooting 227. Courtney Warr (78-74-82) tied for 26th place and Heather Arnold (76-81-76) tied for 28th place while Katelyn Stanier rounded out the Bulldog five with a tie for 36th place.

The Bulldogs finish out the season in two weeks as they participate in the OVC tournament. Three-day event will be hosted by Jacksonville State at The Shoals on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in Florence, Ala., Monday through Wednesday, April 14 - 16.
