Samford Women's Golf Moves Up In Final Round Of Lady Jaguar Invitational

March 4, 2008

MOBILE Ala. --- The Samford women's golf team finished sixth Tuesday in the final day of the South Alabama Lady Jaguar Invitational held at the Azalea City Golf Course in Mobile, Ala. The Bulldogs shot four strokes worse than their round one score of 314 but the finish was one spot better than their placement after day one.

"It was a little disappointing to finish sixth after working so hard," Samford assistant coach Ian Thompson said. "I think if we had played better we could have pushed into third or fourth place. So it's a little disappointing considering our improvement. We left a lot out there and we still have a lot to give.

"Despite the disappointments, we had an overall pleasing performance. This field was significantly tougher than the opponents we saw last week. We finished about #79 Middle Tennessee State, host team South Alabama, and #107 Jacksonville State, which it is always good to finish in front of your rival."

The Bulldogs shot a tournament score of 632, placing them behind top five East Tennessee State, Southern Mississippi, McNeese State, Belmont and Lamar University. Leading the Bulldog playing five were Maria Troche and Katelyn Stanier who tied for 24th place. The duo shot a total score of 156 while Heather Arnold shot 159 to tie for 33rd place. Courtney Warr shot 162 to finish in a tie for 47th place, and Sara Hunt shot 164 to finish in a tie for 60th place. Individual Kellie O'Connell finished in 95th with a total score of 175.

The Bulldogs will now prep for their home tournament, the Samford Intercollegiate, which they will host March 17-18. The two-day event will be held at Limestone Springs Golf Course in Oneonta, Ala., and will field 16 teams.
