Women's Basketball Hits Road for UNC Asheville
Dec. 18, 2002 Samford travels to UNC Asheville Thursday night in women's college basketball action. Tipoff is 6 p.m. CST. The game can be heard on WVSU 91.1 FM as well as over the internet at www.samfordsports.com. The Bulldogs are going for their second consecutive win. Lindsey Harris scored 14 points and Chelsee Insell added 13 points to lead Samford to a 47-44 win over Alabama State last Saturday. The Bulldogs snapped the Lady Hornets 13-game home winning streak. With 30 seconds left in the game, ASU's Brandy Davis forced up a shot that bounced off the rim into Insell's hand. Insell made two free throws to seal the win with three seconds. Andrea Ward and LaBrena Friend each scored six points. UNC Asheville is 2-5. Lindsey Roche scored 14 points and Tonisha Jackson chipped in 13 points, but it wasn't enough as UNC Asheville fell to Tennessee Tech on the road Tuesday night. UNCA trailed 31-24 at halftime, but Tennessee Tech outscored the Bulldogs 38-22 in the second half to pull away for the 69-46 win. Three players average in double figures for UNCA. Kristal Hood leads the team averaging 14.1 points per game while Lindsey Roche (10.4 ppg) and Shantell Waiters (11.7) are on her heels. Samford and UNC Asheville meet for the first time ever Thursday. The Bulldogs have played only one other team from the state of North Carolina (Campbell).
The Bulldogs have 10 days off after the UNC Asheville game. Samford next plays in the Eastern Kentucky Classic Dec. 29 and Dec. 30. Samford will play Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky.
