"You have to give credit to Jacksonville State," Samford head coach Mike Morris said. "They are a good team that is well coached and they played very well. The teams traded baskets over the next few minutes, but the Gamecocks closed the half on a 10-2 run to take a 47-32 lead into halftime.

JSU answered Samford's run with a 9-0 run of its own to push the lead back out to 12 at 62-50 with 8:01 to play after a jumper by Efezokhae. Samford fought back to cut the lead to six at 66-60 with 2:30 to play on a layup by Towns, but that was as close as the Bulldogs could get, and Samford eventually fell by a score of 76-63.
