Women's Basketball Falls To No. 14 George Washington, 64-57

NEW ORLEANS - The Samford women's basketball team dropped a 64-57 decision to the 14th-ranked George Washington Colonials Saturday on the final day of the Four Points By Sheraton Invitational, hosted by the University of New Orleans.

Samford (6-2) was led by Savannah Hill with 15 points. Alex Munday had 13 points and a team-high six rebounds. Emily London added 10 points for the Bulldogs.

George Washington (6-3) was led by Kimberly Beck with 21 points. Jessica Adair had 19 points and eight rebounds. Jazmine Adair followed with 12 points, and Sarah-Jo Lawrence added 10 points for the Colonials.

Samford trailed by as much as 15 points in the second half at 52-37 and 55-40, but the Bulldogs went on a 17-5 run to cut the lead to three at 60-57 with 37 seconds left, but Beck hit four free throws down the stretch to seal the win for George Washington.

George Washington jumped out to an early 11-2 lead with 15:34 to play in the first half. Samford cut the lead to five at 11-6 with 12:00 to go in the period after a layup by Taryn Towns.

GWU pushed its lead back out to eight at 17-9 with 10:01 to play in the half. With Samford trailing, 23-15, the Bulldogs went on a 12-0 run to take a 27-23 lead with 3:17 to play following a jumper by Hill. The teams headed to halftime tied, 29-29.

The loss ends a six-game winning streak for the Bulldogs. Samford shot 40 percent from the floor, while GWU hit 36.7 percent of its shots.

Samford will return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 5, when the Bulldogs open Ohio Valley Conference play by playing host to Jacksonville State. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start from the Pete Hanna Center.
