Cochran reaches 1,000 in 66-51 Loss
Nov. 30, 2000 BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Samford senior Aimee Cochran scored the 1,000th point of her career in Samford's 66-51 loss to UCF in Trans America Athletic Conference women's basketball action at Seibert Hall on Thursday night. UCF (2-3, 1-0 TAAC) jumped out to a 6-0 lead behind a pair of three-pointers by Nicole Dunson who finished with a game-high 20 points. Lanetra Cook added 11 points for UCF. The Golden Knights shot 50 percent from the floor and 50 percent from three-point range. Samford (1-4, 0-1 TAAC) was led by Danielle Pinkston who matched her career-high with 15 points. Cochran added 10 for the Bulldogs. Samford overcame a 26-22 halftime deficit to take 36-33 lead on a jumper by Pinkston with 15:11 remaining in the game. From that point on UCF would dominate the offensive boards. The Golden Knights went on a 22-3 run outscoring Samford 11-1 on second chance points to build a 53-39 lead with 6:46 to play. UCF out rebounded the Bulldogs 24-10 in the second half and 44-26 in the game. "We just are not playing good Samford basketball right now," said head coach Janet Cone. "I think the potential is there for us to be very good. We just have to continue to work harder on offense." Cochran became Samford's first 1,000 point scorer with a three point shot with 5:35 left in the game. "It is bitter sweet for Aimee," said Cone. "She would trade in all of those points for a win but it is a great accomplishment for her."
Samford will return to action on Saturday when it hosts Florida Atlantic in a 4:15 p.m. game at Seibert Hall. The Samford men will play Stetson at 2 p.m. in the first game of the double header.
