Women's Basketball Improves To 2-0 With 66-51 Win Over Lipscomb

Nov. 27, 2004

Box Score

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Sophomore forward Alex Munday scored 20 points and pulled down seven rebounds to lead the Samford women's basketball team to a 66-51 win over Lipscomb on the first day of the Sheraton Roundball Classic at Birmingham-Southern's Bill Battle Coliseum.

"This was a great win for us," Samford head coach Mike Morris said. "I thought we played extremely hard and did everything well. I thought everyone that came in helped us. It was probably one of the better wins since I have been here."

"I challenged our team before the game, because I think Lipscomb is a very good team," Morris said. "Coach Bennett does an outstanding job with them. They won the Atlantic Sun last year, and are picked to win it again this year. I am very proud of the way we played."

Behind Munday's 20 points, junior guard Cora Beth Smith scored 14 points for the Bulldogs. Senior guard Sarah Clement scored eight points and grabbed seven rebounds.

Samford (2-0) jumped out to an early lead at 16-8 with 11:33 to go in the first half on a free throw by Clement. Lipscomb (0-2) then went on a 12-2 run to take a 20-18 lead at the 8:06 mark in the half on a layup by Lindsey Daly. The score stayed close for the rest of the half, with Samford taking a 33-29 lead into halftime.

Samford opened the second half by scoring eight of the first 10 points to push its lead to 41-31 with 14:40 to go in the game on a jumper by Clement. Lipscomb cut the Samford lead to seven at 58-51, but Samford scored the final eight points of the game to claim the 66-51 win.

Samford will play Wofford on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. on the final day of the tournament. Wofford fell to host Birmingham-Southern, 65-57 in the early game on Saturday. Sunday's game can be heard locally on WVSU-FM 91.1, or worldwide on the internet at www.samfordsports.com.
