Samford Falls at Southern Miss
Nov. 25, 2000 HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The University of Southern Mississippi used a pressing defense to force 33 Samford turnovers as the Golden Eagles defeated Samford University 64-48 in women's basketball action Saturday night at the Green Reed Coliseum. Southern Miss (4-0) was led by the duo of Jessica Woods and Angela Johnson who each scored 15 points. Dana Jones chipped in 12 points for the Golden Eagles. Samford (1-2) was led by Aimee Cochran who scored 17 points off the bench. Danielle Pinkston added eight points and Wendi Wilcox grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds for the Bulldogs. Samford had trouble with the Southern Miss press all evening. After Jennifer East opened the game with a three-pointer to give Samford its only lead, the Lady Eagles went on a 20-3 run over the next 10:20 to take a 20-6 lead. The Bulldogs answered with a 15-7 run sparked by eight points from Pinkston. Southern Miss made three free-throws in the final 20 seconds of the half to take a 30-21 halftime lead. In the second half the Bulldogs pulled to within five points at 33-28 on a three-pointer by Cochran. Southern Miss went on a 14-6 run to extend its lead to 19 points 53-34 Southern Miss owned the offensive boards out rebounding the Bulldogs 15-8 on the offensive glass and outscored the Bulldogs 13-2 on second chance points.
Samford will return to action on Tuesday night when the Bulldogs travel to Alabama State for a 6 p.m. tipoff.
