Samford's Season Ends With Loss To Campbell
March 8, 2001 ORLANDO, Fla. - Seven Samford seniors played the final game of their collegiate careers as the top-seeded Campbell Camels eliminated, the No. 8 seed, Samford 79-58 in the SunTrust Trans America Athletic Conference tournament at UCF Arena on Thursday. Campbell (21-6) shot 63 percent in the second half to break open a close game at halftime. The Camels opened the game on a 6-0 run but Samford (8-21) bounced back and took a 17-16 lead at the 6:01 point of the first half. The lead was short lived as Campbell re-took the lead at 18-17. With the game tied at 24 with 2:35 remaining, Campbell used a 9-1 run to close out the half and go into the locker room up 33-25. The second half was all Campbell. The Camels opened the second half on a 20-8 run over the first eight minutes to build a 53-33 lead and Samford never got any closer than 18 points the rest of the game. "Campbell is a very good team," said Samford head coach Janet Cone. "Our effort was excellent as always, but they turned up the tempo in the second half and with our offense it is hard to come back because of the time it takes to run the offense. I am very proud of our seniors and they should be proud of what they have started. It was good to see our freshmen play well. As we send out this senior class the freshmen are the key to our future." Second team All-TAAC performer Aimee Cochran led the Bulldogs with nine points while freshman Natalie McLendon scored seven points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
Campbell placed three players in double figures led by TAAC Player of the Year April Cromartie
who had 16 points and eight rebounds. Janice Washington scored 14 points and Crystal Clary
added 10 points.
