UCF SOLIDIFIES SIXTH SEED WITH WIN OVER SAMFORD
March 1, 2001 ORLANDO, Fla. - The University of Central Florida women's basketball team secured sixth place in the Trans America Athletic Conference with a 64-54 victory over Samford University on Thursday night at the UCF Arena. By winning the game, the Golden Knights (9-17, 7-10 TAAC) secured the sixth seed in the Trans America Athletic Conference tournament. Samford (7-19, 6-11 TAAC) can finish no better than seventh. Lanetra Cooks sank two three-pointers to give the Golden Knights a 6-5 lead early in the game, but it was the Bulldogs that gained a seven-point advantage at just under the half way mark. From there, UCF went on a 19-12 run solidified by a Adrienne Billings three-pointer at the buzzer and took a 30-23 lead to the locker room. In the second half, the Golden Knights would lead by as much as 19 points thanks in part to another 20-10 run. Samford shot 25.8% for the game compared to UCF's 45.3%. Samford seniors Aimee Cochran and Jennifer Lutrell each had a game-high 12 points while Giovanni Price added 11 points. The Bulldogs made a run at the end of the game to bring the lead down to 10 points but the lack of three point shooting kept the Bulldogs from being able to make a serious threat. Samford was just 4-23 (17 percent) from three point range.
Samford will wrap up the regular season on Saturday at Florida Atlantic. The Bulldogs need a win
and for UCF to defeat Jacksonville State on Saturday to claim the number seven seed in next
