Women's Basketball Beats Morehead State 65-55

MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Tish Pilkerton and LaBrena Friend each scored 15 points to lead the Samford women's basketball team to a 65-55 victory over the Morehead State Lady Eagles in Ellis T. Johnson Arena Saturday night.

Samford (9-14, 2-10 OVC) opened the game with an 8-0 run on two three-pointers by Friend and a jumper by Alex Munday. Morehead State (9-14, 6-6 OVC) then answered with an 8-0 run of its own to tie the game at 8-8 with 12:13 left in the first half. After Samford retook the lead at 10-8, the Lady Eagles went on another 8-0 run to take a 16-10 lead with 9:14 to go in the half on two free throws by Kandi Brown. MSU held a 25-17 lead with 4:37 to go, but Samford fought back to tie the game at 27-27, and then the Bulldogs took a 29-27 lead on a steal and layup by Pilkerton in the closing seconds of the first half.

Samford pushed its lead to five points at 32-27 early in the second half. MSU then scored the next five points to tie the game at 32-32 with 17:16 to go in the game. Samford answered with a 5-0 run of its own to take a 37-32 lead with 15:55 to go on a three-pointer by Chelsee Insell. The Lady Eagles then fought back to tie the game at 39-39 with 12:31 left on a layup by DeVonda Williams. With MSU leading, 44-42 with less than 10 minutes to go, Samford went on a 10-0 run to take a 52-44 lead with 5:33 left in the game on a layup by Munday. Morehead State came back to cut the Samford lead to two at 57-55 with 1:18 to go, but Samford closed the game with an 8-0 run to make the final score 65-55.

Behind Pilkerton and Friend, Insell scored 10 points for the Bulldogs.

Morehead State was led by Brown with 17 points. Megen Gearhart scored 15 points for the Lady Eagles, and Williams pulled down 12 rebounds.
 

 

The win ended a seven-game losing streak for Samford. The Bulldogs will return to action on Thursday, Feb. 19, when they play host to Austin Peay. Tip-off for the game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Seibert Hall.
