Box Score

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Samford's Sarah Clement scored a career-high 14 points and the Bulldogs made a season-high nine three-pointers but still came up on the short end of a 62-57 score in Trans America Athletic Conference women's basketball action against Jacksonville State Saturday afternoon.

Clement was the only Bulldog in double figures as Samford dropped to 5-14 on the season and 4-6 in the TAAC. The Bulldogs shot 35 percent in the game from the floor, but shot a season-high 60 percent from three-point range. Missed lay-ups and a six minute scoring drought in the first half allowed Jacksonville State to gain a 27-22 halftime lead.

Jacksonville State (7-12, 4-6 TAAC) was led by Amanda Gallagher who scored a game-high 16 points and Amanda Tyus who added 14 points for the Lady Gamecocks. Free throw shooting was the key for Jacksonville State as it shot 89 percent from the charity stripe going 16-18. The Lady Gamecocks were 15-16 from the line in the second half.

The two teams combined for a total of 44 turnovers and 36 personal fouls which led to a choppy game. The game was tied at 14-14 at the 10:04 mark of the first half when JSU went on a 11-2 run over the next 7:08 which included holding Samford scoreless for six minutes and 24 seconds. The Bulldogs fought back with a 6-2 run to close out the first half and went into the locker rom down 27-22.

Samford would get as close as four points twice in the second half but each time Tyus would answer the Bulldog threat with a basket. It was still a five-point game with 7:10 remaining when JSU went on 13-5 run to gain its largest lead of the game at 60-48 with 3:23 to play. Samford once again rallied at the end of the half as Jennifer East hit a three-pointer with six seconds remaining to bring Samford to within five points.

Jacksonville State held an 18-6 advantage on points in the paint and a 15-4 edge in second chance points. The Lady Gamecocks out-rebounded the Bulldogs 41-29.
