Troy State Downs Bulldog Women 74-58
Jan. 24, 2002 BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Troy State University placed three players in double-figures as they ended a nine-game losing streak with a 74-58 Atlantic Sun Conference women's basketball victory over Samford Thursday night. Samford was led by 11 points from Noot Pittman and Sarah Clement. Pittman matched her season high in points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Clement was 4-5 from the floor as she reached double figures for the second time this year. Clarissa Clark and Jennifer East each added eight points for the Bulldogs who dropped to 1-14 on the season and 0-8 in conference play. Troy State moves to 4-11 overall and 3-5 in the Atlantic Sun. Chaquita Alexander scored a career-high 25 points on 9-18 shooting from the floor. LaToya Gay and Thea Herring each had 15 points. The Trojans also had six blocked shots. Troy State shot 43 percent from the floor while holding Samford to 40 percent from the floor. Samford was just two of 14 from three-points range while Troy State hit on seven of 27 from long range. The turning point of the game was a five minute and 47 second period in the first half when Troy State went on a 10-0 run to turn a 16-12 game into a 26-12 game. The Trojans would go into halftime up 36-20. The second half was played even but the Bulldogs could not get closer than 11 points.
Both teams will be back in action on Saturday. Samford will host Mercer at Seibert Hall at 2 p.m. while Troy State will travel to Jacksonville State.
