Women's Basketball Loses at Campbell
Jan. 23, 2003 BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- Jennifer Lodge scored 12 of her game-high 14 points in the second half and Samford didn't score in the final 6:01 as Campbell rallied back to defeat the Bulldogs, 49-42, in Atlantic Sun Women's basketball action at Carter Gym. Samford fell to 0-4 in the A-Sun and 4-11 overall while Campbell improved to 6-9 and 2-2 in the conference. Cora Beth Smith scored 10 points to lead Samford. Che' Walker added nine points. Jessica Stanley and Chantel Martin each scored 10 points for the Lady Camels. Samford only shot 21 percent (6-of-29) in the second half and shot 30 percent for the game. The Lady Camels finished the game shooting 41 percent. The Bulldogs led 42-38 with 6:01 left in the second half. Giovanni Price hit a 3-pointer and Chelsee Insell hit a running layup for Samford. Kristal Troy and Lodge scored back-to-back baskets to tie the game at 42 with 3:58 left. After two scoreless minutes, Martin made 1-of-2 free throws to give the Lady Camels the lead, 43-42, with 1:43 remaining. Campbell ended the game on an 11-0 run to take the lead for the first time since the four minute mark in the first half. Walker scored eight points in the first half to lead Samford to a 24-22 halftime lead. The Bulldogs ended the half on a 14-5 run and shot 40 percent from the field. Trailing 17-10 with 7:43 left, Walker hit a jumper
and Chelsee Insell made a 3-pointer, pulling Samford within two,
17-15, with 5:31 left. Cora Beth Smith's jumper tied the game at 17 with 4:53 remaining. After
Sarah Fox's 3-pointer put Campbell back ahead 20-17,
Smith scored four consecutive points and Lindsey Harris made
a 3-pointer giving the Bulldogs a 24-20 lead with 1:17 left
before halftime. Kendra Damman hit a jumper at the halftime
buzzer.
Samford continues its North Carolina trip against Atlantic Sun foe Gardner-Webb Saturday. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. |
