Stetson Women Top Samford
Jan. 21, 2002 DeLAND, Fla. - Giovanni Price recorded her third double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds, but a six a half minute drought in the second half prevented Samford from ending an 11-game losing streak as Stetson University took a 61-48 Atlantic Sun Conference victory. Samford (1-13, 0-7 A-Sun) overcame a 10-point halftime deficit using a 17-6 run in the opening eight minutes of the second half to take a 42-41 lead. Jennifer East had back-to-back baskets for four of her six points to give the Bulldogs the lead. Stetson tied the game at 42 before Satu Raimesalo hit a three-pointer to put the Hatters on top for good. Noot Pittman hit a basket with 8:43 to play to make the score 45-44. Samford went the next six minutes and 34 seconds without scoring as Stetson began a 15-0 run to build a 60-44 lead. Che' Walker ended the drought with a basket with 2:19 remaining in the game but by then the game was out of reach. Stetson (7-9, 6-3 A-Sun) was led by Amy White who scored 18 points and Tashean Thomas who added 13 points. Eboni Long grabbed 10 rebounds as Stetson out-rebounded the Bulldogs 46-40. Hatters head coach Dee Romine picked up a technical foul at the 13:53 mark of the second half while Samford was making its run. Morgan Vickery scored seven points and grabbed six rebounds. Pittman scored six points and grabbed eight rebounds. Samford held Stetson to 36 percent from the floor but only shot 32 percent. Samford was 10-13 from the free throw line for 77 percent.
The Bulldogs will return home on Thursday night to face Troy State in a 7 p.m. tip off at Seibert Hall.
