JU Catches Fire Against Bulldogs
Jan. 19, 2002 JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Career highs by Morgan Vickery, Jennifer East, and Tara Enoch were not enough to keep the Samford Bulldogs from dropping their 11th straight game 91-65 at Jacksonville University Saturday in Atlantic Sun women's basketball action. Vickery led the Bulldogs for the second-straight game as she went 5-12 from three point range for 17 points. Her five threes were one shy of the school record set by Jennifer Lutrell during the 1997-98 season. East went 4-9 from behind the arch for 12 points and Enoch and Giovanni Price each scored seven points. The Bulldogs took a school record 40 three-point attempts against Jacksonville's zone defense. The Bulldogs connected on a season high 10 threes for 25 percent. Jacksonville (2-13, 1-7 A-Sun) also had three players set career highs in the game. Kat Sungy scored 24 points on 8-11 shooting from the floor and grabbed 12 rebounds. Aisha Stewart was 9-14 from the floor and 3-6 from long range for 23 points and Yolisha Jackson scored 21 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and dished out eight assists. The Dolphins shot a blistering 66 percent from the floor, 64 percent from three-point range and 75 percent from the free throw line. Jacksonville took full advantage of Sungy's height advantage as the 6-1 junior scored 15 points in the first to help JU build an early 30-14 lead. Samford (1-12, 0-6 A-Sun) battled back with a late first half run marked by East and Vickery's three-point shooting. The Bulldogs went on a 13-4 run at the end of the half to trail 41-35 at the break.
Enoch came out in the second half and scored Samford's first five points as the Bulldogs pulled to within one point twice in the first three minutes of the second half. Jacksonville answered the threat with a 10-0 run to take a 54-45 lead with 13:55 to play.
The Dolphins never cooled off and held the Bulldogs to 31 percent shooting from the floor and outscored Samford 38-16 on points in the paint and held a 48-30 rebounding advantage. Samford will have to rebound quickly as the Bulldogs face Stetson on Monday at 6 p.m. CT in Deland, Fla. |
