Samford Falls to Stetson 75-60
Jan. 13, 2001 BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford women's basketball is still looking for consistency. After back-to-back conference wins the Bulldogs simply could not put two strong halves together as they fell to Stetson 75-60 at Seibert Hall Saturday afternoon. The first half was a glimpse of what the Bulldogs are capable of. Samford shot 45 percent from the floor and committed just six turnovers in producing its largest first half out put of the season scoring 41 points. Wendi Wilcox had 10 of her team-high 16 points at the intermission. Everything that went right in the first half went wrong in the second half. The Bulldogs turned the ball over 16 times and shot just 30 percent after halftime and only managed 19 points as they fell to 4-11 on the season and 3-3 in the Trans America Athletic Conference. "We are really disappointed with the way we played in the second half, said Samford head coach Janet Cone. "I told the players at halftime, that we had defended well all year. In the first half our shooting came around but we didn't play good post defense. In the second half, our defense picked up but we had too many turnovers. We have to put both our offense and defense together to beat the top teams in the this conference." Stetson on the other hand showed the consistency that has led to its best start in school history. The Hatters are 12-2 and 4-1 in the TAAC. Amy White led the way with 20 points while Kaisa Tuure scored 19 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Eboni Long added 12 points and Cher Dyson scored 11 to give the Hatters the balanced scoring they have had all season.
Stetson shot 51 percent in the first half to with stand the Bulldogs best half of the season and took a 47-41 lead into the locker room. The Hatters came out cold in the second half. After a Linda Palonen lay-up gave Stetson an eight point lead the Hatters failed to score for the next seven minutes. Samford went on a 9-0 run over that time to take a 50-49 lead with 13:11 to play. Dyson hit a shot from the corner off an in bounds play to put Stetson back on top and begin a 20-4 Stetson run over the next seven minutes which gave the Hatters a 71-54 lead with 5:42 remaining.
The Hatters outscored the Bulldogs 11-2 on second chance points and 16-5 on points off of turnovers in the second half. Samford did manage a slim 38-37 advantage on the boards in the game. Giovanni Price, Aimee Cochran, and Cortney Moore all scored 10 points giving the Bulldogs four players in double-figures for the first time since the Florida Atlantic game on Dec. 2. Samford will now take to the road for a three-game trip that will begin on Thursday, Jan. 18, in Atlanta against Georgia State at 6 p.m. |
