Women's Basketball Takes 62-46 Win At Tennessee-Martin

MARTIN, Tenn. - Monica Maxwell scored14 points, pulled down seven rebounds and dished out a career-high seven assists to lead the Samford women's basketball team to a 62-46 win at Tennessee-Martin Saturday afternoon.

Following Maxwell for Samford (9-5, 2-2 OVC), Taryn Towns had 11 points, six rebounds and five assists. Alex Munday added 10 points and eight rebounds. The win marks the first Samford victory at Tennessee-Martin.

"I've really been pleased with the consistency of the play of Taryn and Monica," Samford head coach Mike Morris said. "They combined for 12 assists and only three turnovers tonight. It was good to see Alex back scoring in double figures tonight. Who really helped us coming off the bench was MaKenzie Spruiell."

For Tennessee-Martin (3-11, 0-4 OVC), Victoria Carlile led the way with 14 points. Crystal Fuller had 14 points and six rebounds. Marie Goyette added 10 points and seven rebounds.

Samford jumped on top early, scoring the first seven points of the game for an early 7-0 lead. The Bulldogs led, 10-2, after a pair of free throws by Savannah Hill with 14:43 to go in the half.

UT Martin fought back to cut the lead to four at 12-8 with 13:15 to go in the half. Samford then went on a 7-2 run to push the lead out to nine at 19-10 with 9:22 to play after a basket by Munday. However, a 10-1 UTM run tied the score at 20-20 with 7:09 to play.

With Samford leading, 26-25 late in the half, late baskets by Hill and Maxwell gave Samford a 30-25 lead at halftime.

Samford pushed its lead out to 13 early in the second half at 40-27 after a three-pointer by Maxwell. The Bulldogs stretched the lead out to 18 at 45-27 after a jumper by Munday.
 

 

With Samford leading, 47-32, UTM went on an 8-1 run to cut the Samford lead to 48-40 with 7:22 to go in the game. Samford pushed its lead out to as much as 16 at 60-44, and

Samford will return to action on Monday, Jan. 7, when the Bulldogs play at Jacksonville State at 5:30 p.m.
