Samford Women Fall 72-64 To Campbell
Jan. 5, 2002 BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Campbell University used an 13-0 run over the first six minutes of the second half to hand Samford University its eighth-straight loss 72-64 in Atlantic Sun women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at Seibert Hall. The game was tied at 33 at halftime as Samford's Jennifer East got a lay-up off a fast break with three seconds remaining in the half. It was the sixth tie of the half. East finished the game with five points, five rebounds, and a career-high six assists. Campbell (4-6, 2-1 A-Sun) started the second half forcing seven Samford turnovers in the opening six minutes and began to dominate the offensive boards. Crystal Clary led the Lady Camels with 17 points and a season-high 16 rebounds. She had eight offensive rebounds as Campbell got 18 second chance points in the second half compared to zero for Samford. In the game the Lady Camels held a 24-8 advantage in second chance points. April Cromartie scored 10 of Campbell's first 14 points of the game and finished with 16 points and seven rebounds. Stacey Hinkle and Kristin Vuckovich each scored 14 points for Campbell. Vuckovich came into the game averaging 2.6 points per game and easily eclipsed her career high in points.
Samford (1-9, 0-3 A-Sun) was led by 19 points from Clarissa Clark who was the only Bulldog in double figures. Noot Pittman grabbed nine rebounds to go along with eight points. Samford shot 47 percent from the floor in the first half but only 36 percent in the second half to finish at 41 percent for the game. Tara Enoch matched her career high with five rebounds all in the first half. At the break, Samford held 21-18 rebounding advantage but Campbell out rebounded the Bulldogs 26-16 in the second half and 44-37 for the game.
Samford's Morgan Vickery ended Campbell's run with a three-pointer at the 14:01 mark of the second half to pull the Bulldogs back to within 10 points at 46-36. She would hit another three on Samford's next possession to get the crowd and the Bulldogs back into the game. Vickery finished with eight points on 2-5 shooting from the arc. Samford would pull to within five points twice in the second half, the last time after a pair of free throws by Giovanni Price with 7:14 remaining. Price ended the game with nine points missing double-figures for only the second time this season. Samford will try to end its longest losing streak since the beginning of the 1998-99 season on Tuesday night when the Bulldogs host Jacksonville State is a 7 p.m. game at Seibert Hall. |
