BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Samford hosted another wall-to-wall day of tennis action Saturday on campus and at the Lakeshore Tennis Center. The finals of the 2002 Bulldog Open begin Sunday at 12 p.m.

Although the Bulldogs have been eliminated from main draw action of both the men's and women's tournament, there were some positive moments in the fall season's final tournament.

"We can build on this tournament and it will help us in the spring season," said women's coach Terri Sisk. "The players know what they need to do to improve their games individually."

Sophomore Jennifer Pharr lost 6-1, 6-1 to Yvonne Ernst of UAB in the quarterfinals of the women's "B" flight. Jamie Aid lost to Ashley Perry of UAB 6-3, 6-4 in the quarters of the women's "C" flight by a 6-3, 6-4 score.

In doubles, Katie Crawford and Emily Nunnally defeated Daisy Humphrey and Laura Kirk of Birmingham Southern 8-5. Jennifer Pharr and Lane Santa Cruz lost 8-4 to Jacksonville State, and Jenny Walls and Lisa Stertzer lost to Birmingham Southern 8-4.

The women's singles finals, consolation finals and doubles finals will be played Sunday at Samford University beginning at 12 p.m.

In men's singles play, Tennessee State's Jamaal Brown halted Bulldog freshman Johnny Griffee's cindarella run through the "B" open main draw 6-4, 6-4.

In doubles action, Griffee and James Bryce were defeated 8-2 by UA-Huntsville. Joey Jensen and Andres Leal lost to Shorter College 8-6. Raphael Bohli and Travis Johnson were defeated by AUM 8-4.

The finals of the men's "A", "B" draw are at 1 p.m. at the Lakeshore facility.
