Men's Tennis On The Road Again, Meets Eastern Illinois and Murray State
April 4, 2008
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The Samford men's tennis team will play its third and fourth matches on a five-match road trip this weekend, April 5-6, against Eastern Illinois and Murray State. The Bulldogs will meet up with the Panthers of Eastern Illinois on Saturday before heading to Murray, Ky., to take on the Racers. Samford (8-6, 3-0 OVC) comes off a tough weekend in which they picked up two losses against two good tennis teams in UT-San Antonio and New Mexico State. The Bulldogs fell to the UTSA Roadrunners, 4-3, last Friday and then fell Saturday to the New Mexico State Aggies, 5-2. However, the Bulldogs are still undefeated in conference play. They hold on to second place in the conference ranking, just behind Tennessee Tech. Senior Renan Silveira is the top singles player in the conference with an undefeated 3-0 record against conference opponents. Fellow Bulldog Hank Grant ranks second in the conference at the No. 3 court with a 7-2 overall record while freshman Oliver Reynolds tops the No. 6 singles list. Silveira and doubles partner Jordan Delass are currently second on the OVC overall doubles list while Grant and Sam Huffman rank second in No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Eastern Illinois (10-6, 4-1 OVC) is currently third in the conference standings behind Tennessee Tech and Samford. The Panthers went 2-0 last weekend, defeating OVC foes Eastern Kentucky and Tennessee State. EIU has won six of their last seven matches, including four against conference opponents. The Panthers' No 5 player, Chris Thomas leads the conference at that position with a 5-1 record. Murray State (1-9, 1-3 OVC) went winless on the weekend. The Racers fell Thursday to in-state foe No. 50 Kentucky by a score of 7-0. On Friday, the Racer men were swept by Morehead State and then fell to Eastern Kentucky, 5-2, on Sunday.
Match play between the Panthers and the Bulldogs will begin Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at the Darling Courts on the EIU campus. On Sunday, Samford's match with Murray State will also begin at 10 a.m. at the Bennie Pursell Tennis Courts. |
