Samford Tennis Takes On Mercer Saturday

March 20, 2008

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The Samford men's and women's tennis team will take on the Mercer Bears Saturday in a non-conference match-up at the Pat M. Courington Tennis Pavilion on the Samford University campus.

The Samford men (7-4, 3-0 OVC) come off a week in which they won three straight matches, bringing their win streak to five consecutive matches. The Bulldogs downed in-state rival Jacksonville State by a score of 6-1 in a midweek match and then swept Austin Peay and non-conference foe Gadsden State, 7-0.

The Mercer men (4-11, 2-4 A-Sun) enter Saturday's match after a tough 6-1 loss to Campbell on Wednesday. The loss snapped a two-match win streak for the Bears, who have lost six of their last eight.

The Samford women (9-3, 3-0 OVC) come off a tough loss to Houston on Sunday. The match came down to the wire but with the Bulldog only winning three singles matches and the Cougars taking the doubles point, Houston walked away with the win and Samford was left with its third loss of the season.

The Mercer women (7-7, 2-4 A-Sun) also fell to Campbell on Wednesday, losing the match by a score of 5-2. The Bears had won lost four of their last six.

Match play begins Saturday, March 22, with a 9 a.m. match-up between the Samford women and the Mercer women. The men will follow shortly after at approximately 1:30 p.m. A full recap and results will be available on www.samfordsports.com.
