Samford Men Up-End Projected No. 1 Jacksonville State
March 13, 2008
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The Samford men's tennis team picked up its third consecutive conference win Thursday as it took the afternoon match from in-state rival Jacksonville State, 6-1. The win was the second for the Bulldogs against the Gamecocks this season, who have been projected to repeat as Ohio Valley Conference champions this year. The Bulldog men took two of three doubles matches with Sam Huffman and Hank Grant playing at the No. 1 court and Renan Silveira and Jordan Delass at the No. 2 court in this match. Both duos earned wins against their opponents at those courts while No. 3 tandem Kelwin Dewet and Richard Walsh fell, 8-2, to Gamecock duo Amores/Solomon. Samford capped off the win, taking five singles matches from the Gamecocks. Delass fell in three sets, a match that was retired, while Grant won a tough battle at the No. 4 spot in three-set match with Joey Unkenholz. The Bulldogs are back in action Saturday, March 15, as they take on another OVC opponent in Austin Peay. Match play for the men will begin at 1 p.m., following the women's match at the Pat M. Courington Tennis Pavilion. Samford 6, Jacksonville State 1 Doubles Singles
