Men's Tennis Falls To No. 33 Vanderbilt

NASHVILLE, Tenn. ---- The Samford men's tennis team took on their second nationally ranked team in seven days as they traveled to the Music City to take on No. 33 Vanderbilt on Saturday at the Currey Tennis Center. The Bulldogs fought hard but the Commodores handed Samford its third consecutive loss in a 7-0 sweep by Vanderbilt.

In singles play, senior Jordan Delass fell to Ryan Preston at the No. 1 court in three sets (2-6, 6-3, 6-4) while Kelwin Dewet wa held winless (6-0, 6-0) at the No. 2 spot by Vijay Paul. Renan Silveira lost a close match to Nick Cromydas at the No. 3 court by a score of 6-4, 7-6 (10-5). At the No. 4 court, Hank Grant fell to Bryant Salcedo, 6-2, 6-2, while No. 5 player Richard Walsh fell to Evan Dufaux (6-1, 6-3) and No. 6 player Sam Huffman lost to Adam Baker (6-4, 6-2).

The Commodores won the doubles point, but Samford was able to walk away with one win at the No. 2 court. Bulldog duo Grant/Huffman defeated Preston/Salcedo, 9-8 (7-3). At the No.1 court, Silveira/Delass fell to Cromydas/Dufaux, 9-8 (7-1) and at the No. 3 court, Dushock/Walsh fell to Paul/Baker, 8-6.

Samford is back in action on Sunday, taking on Columbus State in its home regular season opener before heading out on the road again for three straight matches. The Bulldogs will take on Southeastern Louisiana on Feb. 8 at 1 p.m., and then face the Ragin' Cajuns of Louisiana-Lafayette on Feb. 9 at noon. Finally, the Samford men will kick off conference play at Jacksonville State followed by almost a month off before return back to home play.
