Men's Golf Heads To Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate

Oct. 4, 2008

STATESBORO, Ga. - The Samford golf team will continue play in its 2008 fall season Monday as the Bulldogs begin competition in the Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate hosted by Georgia Southern University. The tournament will be held at the Greg Norman-designed Savannah Quarters Country Club.

The 13-team field will play 36 holes Monday and the final 18 on Tuesday. This year's field consists of Samford, Armstrong State, Davidson, Elon, Francis Marion, Furman, Georgia Southern, Jacksonville, Kennesaw State, Old Dominion, Troy, Winthrop and Western Carolina.

The 2008 Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate will feature six of the 11 Southern Conference programs this week. Samford is in the midst of its first season as a member of the prestigious SoCon.

So far this season, the Bulldogs have competed in a pair of tournaments and have turned in finishes of ninth place and 14th place. Samford placed ninth in the 2008 Cobb-Ferrell Mean Green Classic on Sept. 9 and then finished 14th at the Raines Development Group Intercollegiate on Sept. 16.

Samford's 2008-09 roster boasts nine returning letterwinners and a talented transfer from Mississippi State, Alex Harper. Samford's senior class consists of Bobby Baird, Jeremy Cox, Ian Cutting and Andrew Villarreal.

The Bulldogs don't have any freshmen on this year's squad, therefore junior Don Franklin and sophomores Tyler Baird, Martin Bunt, Chris Duffy and Houston Hough will be looked upon to anchor the team.

Head coach Woodie Eubanks is in the midst of his sixth season at the helm of the Samford men's golf program. Assistant coach Ryan Mayberry is in his first season on the coaching staff.

Following Monday's opening 36-holes of competition, Samford will complete play in the 2008 Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate on Tuesday with the final round at the Savannah Quarters Country Club.
