Men's Golf Seventh After One Round at Tri-State Classic
March 5, 2002 PICKWICK DAM, Tenn. - Mike Clements and Seth Mobley posted first round totals of 76 to place in the Top 20 and Samford is in seventh after one round of the shortened Tri-State Classic at Pickwick State Park. Cold temperatures and windy conditions shortened the tournament from 54 holes to 36, with teams playing only one round on Monday. Tennessee Tech's Kyle Young and Lipscomb's Deke Berlin each shot 70 as top individuals, and Tennessee Tech shot an even-par 288 to lead the team standings. Mobley, fighting cold symptoms along with the conditions, shot 38 on the front and back nines. After shooting 37 on his first nine, Clements was in position to place in the Top 10 before an untimely double bogey on his final hole gave him a total of 39 on his final nine. Russell Kelly shot 77 and Andy McRae and Bradley Farmer fired a pair of 79s to round out the Bulldog roster.
Samford's 308 has the Bulldogs beginning Tuesday's round 20 strokes out of the lead, but only two from moving into the tournament's Top 5.
