'Dogs Finish Ninth At North Texas Tourney

Sept. 9, 2008

DENTON, Texas - Following a two-hour rain delay at the 2008 Cobb-Ferrell Mean Green Classic on Tuesday, the Samford men's golf team turned in a final-round score of 307 to finish the two-day tournament in ninth place.

At the Lantana Country Club (par 72/7,147 yards), the Bulldogs' Andrew Villarreal carded the team's best score of the day with an even-par 72. Samford's senior from Decatur, Ala., finished the Mean Green Classic with a final score of 220 (72-76-72).

The Bulldogs concluded Tuesday's final round of play just five strokes short of eighth-place Texas-San Antonio, which posted a team total of 902. Sam Houston State and Louisiana-Lafayette finished the 12-team competition in a tie for first place at 878.

Louisiana Lafayette's Devin Carrey won the individual title with a three-round total of 210, 6-under par. Samford's Ian Cutting finished with the Bulldogs' best overall score Tuesday with a two-day total of 2-over 218. Cutting, Samford's senior from Fayetteville, Ga., earned a tie for sixth place in the tournament.

The Bulldogs' Bobby Baird tallied a three-day total of 235 (81-76-78), while Tyler Baird finished at 237 (77-77-83) and Jeremy Cox compiled a final score of 238 (78-78-82).

Martin Bunt, Samford's sophomore from Pensacola, Fla., competed as an individual this week and turned in a three-round scorecard of 228 (72-72-84). He tallied the best performance of all unattached players and finished in a tie for 33rd place.

The Samford University men's golf team will next be in action Monday, Sept. 15, as the Bulldogs begin play in the 2008 Francis Marion Invite held in Florence, S.C.
