Men's Golf Seventh at TAAC Championship; Georgia State Wins Team and Individual Honors

DADEVILLE, Ala. - Georgia State's Allen Thompson shot 70 in the final round and repeated as tournament medallist and the Panthers won their third title in four years at the Trans America Athletic Conference Men's Golf Championship.

Thompson shot under par all three rounds (71-69-70/210) and GSU finished with a 12-under-par 852 in the TAAC Championship played on the Par 72, 6,864-yard Tradition course at StillWaters Resort. Tournament runner-up UCF finished 41 strokes behind GSU with a total of 893.

D.J. Fiese (70-70-74/214) also finished under par for the Panthers, finishing fourth at -2. The win is also GSU's second consecutive TAAC Championship, and the total of 852 is second best in tournament history. A Houston Baptist squad led by Colin Montgomerie in 1986 posted the record low of 849.

Samford finished the tournament in seventh position, shooting 309-298-308/915.

Russell Kelly shot -1 in the final round as the #1 player (77-73-71/221) and finished in the Top 10 for the Bulldogs. Charlie Gibson (76-77-76/228 finished 22nd, Mike Clements (76-75-83/234) placed 35th, Andy McRae (80-73-80/236) was 38th and Seth Mobley rounded out the Samford roster with a score of 85-85-79/249) to finish 49th.

The Panthers also collected the team and individual titles for the first time since 1996, when UCF's Jason Opal finished as top medallist and the Golden Knights won the team title.

Georgia State's Thompson, Fiese and Dave Womack joined Jacksonville's Ben Lockwood, UCF's Andy Hollis and Troy State's Cleve Daniels as 2001 All-Tournament selections.

Rounding out the Top-10 were GSU's Jack Croyle, Jacksonville State's Angel Monguzzi, UCF's Kevin Kahle, Kelly from Samford, Matt Johnson from Troy State and Campbell's Simon Dunn.
