April 20, 2008

PADUCAH, Ky. --- The Samford men's golf team sits in a tie for sixth place with Jacksonville State after one round of play in the 2008 Ohio Valley Conference Men's Golf Championship, which is being played at the Country Club of Paducah.

The Bulldogs shot 315 on the day, 27 over par, while Eastern Kentucky ran away with the top spot, shooting an even par in the first round. Murray State follows in second place at 17 over par, while Tennessee Tech trails three strokes in third and Austin Peay sits in fourth place at 22 over. Tennessee-Martin is fifth while Eastern Illinois, Tennessee State and Morehead State round out the final three.

Freshman Tyler Baird currently sits in a tie for fifth place. Baird shot 74 (+2) on the day. He is joined in the top 20 by senior John Turnipseed who is tied for 19th place after the first round. Turnipseed shot 78 in round one. Just six over par. Bobby Baird is tied for 27th place (80/+8) while Ian Cutting is tied for 37th place (83/+11) and Martin Bunt is tied for 45th (85/+13).

"We have a chance to move up but we just played bad today," Samford head coach Woodie Eubanks said. "The conditions were not hard, we just need to keep our heads up. We still have two more rounds of golf to play."

Teams will tee off for the second round Monday beginning at 8:30 a.m. Hole-by-hole live scoring for each round of the Championship can be found at www.golfstat.com. Check www.samfordsports.com for a recap after each round.
