GLENCOE, Ala. - Samford's men's golf team fired a third-round 314, and finished eighth out of 18 teams at the 2003 Amoco Ultimate/Young Oil Intercollegiate at the par-72, 6,846-yard Silver Lakes Golf Course on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. Ryan Mayberry (70-74-76--220) finished alone in fifth place to lead the Bulldogs, and Andy McRae's (79-73-74--226) final two rounds propelled him to a 19th-place finish. Louis South II tied McRae in 19th place (71-74-81--226).

"Ryan's top five finish against this strong of a field is very impressive," said assistant coach Ian Thompson. "And Andy and Louis made a great push to each crack the top 20."

Host Jacksonville State fired a 293 in the final round to post a 54-hole total of 880 on Tuesday to claim the victory. JSU's Nick Mackay (71-71-73--215) won medalist honors.

Armstrong Atlantic, which entered the day four-shots back, finished second at 885, while South Alabama scored a 894 to finish third. The Jags had taken the lead after the second round with a 288 to hold a one-shot lead over JSU entering the final round, but finished with a 308 on the last 18 holes.

Austin Peay (897) finished fourth, followed by Columbus State (910), UCF (911), Tennessee Tech (913), Samford (916), Florida Atlantic (923) and Middle Tennessee and Birmingham-Southern each tied for 10th at 930.

"We fell back a little bit in the third round which was disappointing," said Thompson.
