ONEONTA, Ala. --- The Samford men's golf team had a great final day in the Samford Intercollegiate Tuesday finishing fifth in the field to keep their place in the top five. The Bulldogs tied with fellow Ohio Valley Conference competitor Murray State for the fifth place spot while New Orleans took the title this year, replacing Austin Peay as the champions of the Samford Intercollegiate.

The Bulldogs were in third place after the teams finished the final four holes of round two this morning. The team shot 283 while John Turnipseed and Martin Bunt sat in the top ten at fifth and tenth places, respectively. The Samford men then fell to fifth place with a tough final round but managed to stay in the top five.

"I'm very pleased with fifth place," Samford head coach Woodie Eubanks said. "Our goal was to finish in the top five and we achieved that goal. I think if we had had a better third round, we could have had a chance of winning the whole thing. Overall, I'm very happy with our improvement so far and I hope we can build on that next week in California."

John Turnipseed finished at the front of the Bulldog pack Tuesday. Turnipseed tied for ninth place, shooting 216 overall (74-69-73). His second round score of 69 was the best for the Bulldogs during the tournament and placed him in fifth place after round two. Martin Bunt and Ian Cutting both join Turnipseed in the top 20. Bunt tied for 16th place, shooting 220, while Cutting had better round today to place him in a tie for 20th place, shooting 221.

Tyler Baird finished in a tie for 23rd place, shooting 222, while Houston Hough tied for 54th place to round out the Bulldog playing five. Playing as individuals were Don Franklin, Bobby Baird and Chris Duffy. Franklin tied for 32nd place with a total score of 225 while Baird and Duffy shot 244 and 256 respectively.

Finishing behind New Orleans was Eastern Kentucky in second place followed by West Florida and USC-Upstate in a tie at fourth. Coming in behind Samford was Troy in seventh place. Trailing the Trojans and rounding out the field were Illinois State (8th), Austin Peay (9th), Tennessee-Martin (10th), Winthrop (11th), Lipscomb (12th), Tennessee Tech (13th), Tennessee State (14th), Nicholls State (15th), and tied at 16th place were Southern Illinois and Morehead State.

Three players had holes-in-one during the two-day event held at Limestone Springs Golf Club in Oneonta, Ala. In round one, Tyler Tucker from USC-Upstate made a hole-in-one on the seventh hole while Josh Gallman (USC-Upstate) and Matthew Galloway each had one in round two.

In statistics, Samford led par 5 scoring at 14 under and par 3 scoring a 15 over while New Orleans led par 4 scoring at two under.

Next up for the Samford men is the Drake Invitational in Diablo, California. The two day event will be next Monday and Tuesday, March 17 - 18, at the Diablo Grande Resort.
