Sept. 18, 2001

Samford's Bulldogs will find a similar Gardner-Webb attack waiting on them when they roll into Boiling Springs, N.C., for Saturday's game.

Samford will have to shake off the rust before Saturday, as the Bulldogs haven't played since Aug. 30. Josh Kellett leads Samford's new one-back offense, as he completed 20 of 38 passes for 163 yards and two touchdowns against Chattanooga in the season opener on Aug. 30. Samford will need to improve the running game to have success against GWU. The Bulldogs had trouble running the ball in game one, tallying just 52 yards on the ground. Sophomore tailback Fred Gilliam rushed 15 times for 65 yards in the 28-14 loss.

The Runnin' Bulldogs are a year more experienced in an offense similar to Samford's and have many of the weapons back from a team that finished 7-4 last season, including 19 returning starters. GWU rolled over UT-Martin 45-20 in their season opener, led by senior tailback Justin Richardson who ran for a career-high 170 yards on 22 carries. East Tennessee State caged GWU's Bulldogs in game two 30-17, but Richardson still tallied 133 yards rushing and a touchdown. Veteran quarterback Jeremy Martin also makes the GWU offense dangerous with his experience, averaging nearly 200 yards of passing per game.
