Football Game with Tennessee Tech to be Played as Scheduled
Sept. 12, 2001 Samford University's football game with Tennessee Tech will go on as scheduled for this Saturday at 11:00 a.m. on the Samford campus, director of athletics Bob Roller announced today. The game is slated for the 11:00 a.m. start as part of the Ohio Valley Conference televised game-of-the-week on Fox SportSouth. Tennessee Tech will travel to Birmingham via bus charters, and the size of Seibert Stadium (6,500 capacity) played a role in the decision as it relates to large venue security. "While we all are stunned by this terrible act and conscious of the tragic loss of lives, we recognize that President Bush has urged all Americans to carry on," Roller said. "This decision has been reached by unanimous consent of the administrations of Samford, Tennessee Tech, and Ohio Valley Conference commissioner Dan Beebe.
"As a future member of the OVC (Samford joins for all sports in 2003), we agree with the league's position to use every possible public opportunity to communicate that we are not going to be intimidated by this cowardly act."
