May 13, 2002

Sophomore running back Jason Ogletree starred on the first day of the 2002 Samford Football Dog Games on Monday, posting the top score in two events and tying in the third of competition. Ogletree's effort was not enough to give his Blue team the lead, however, as the Red team leads the overall competition 690.5 to 642.5.

Ogletree claimed the power clean by lifting 300 pounds three times and won the vertical jump with an effort of 35.5 inches. He tied his Blue teammate, freshman Eddie Mason, and two Red members - Brad Baker and Andy Whaley - in the incline press with three lifts of 295 pounds.

For the Red team, Matthew Forester, Garrick McCarty and Howard Terrell each power cleaned 265 pounds and Duwan Northcutt had the top red vertical jump of 34 inches.

"When those guys walked in the weight room today, it was an atmosphere of pure competition," said head coach Bill Gray. "When we started posting the running tally on the board, they began watching intently. At the end of all of this, the goal is for our team to realize that our results on the field are directly affected by how hard they work in the weight room. I'm excited to see what happens on Tuesday."

Tuesday's events include academics, broad jump and back squats.
