Football Practices In Shells Tuesday

April 15, 2008

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford football team practiced for about an hour and a half in shells Tuesday afternoon at Seibert Stadium. The workout was the first practice for Samford following Saturday's first spring scrimmage.

Head Coach Pat Sullivan said he and his staff have studied the film from Saturday's scrimmage and that they saw some good things from the Bulldogs.

"I thought, after looking at the film, our running backs did a good job," Sullivan said. "It was good to see Harris Johnson come back. He had a knee injury last year, but he came out and had a nice scrimmage on Saturday. Chris Evans and Alex Barnett also did some nice things there.

"Defensively, we got a couple of turnovers, which was good on that side of the ball," Sullivan said. "Offensively, it was not good that we turned it over. I thought our offensive line did some nice things. It was good to see the enthusiasm they had."

Sullivan also talked about some areas the Bulldogs need to improve on after the scrimmage.

"We need to make a few more plays," Sullivan said. "I thought our wide receivers had an average day. They had chances to make some plays that they didn't make and we need to get that corrected. We need a little better pass protection that we had on Saturday."

Sullivan added he has been pleased with what he has seen from his team so far during spring practice.

"We've challenged them all spring to not waste a day, and so far they've done that, they've had good enthusiasm," Sullivan said. "All of the intangibles are good on this team. We just have to correct some mistakes and get some of our new players in here this fall and put it all together and I think we will be okay."

The Bulldogs will practice again Wednesday at 4 p.m. The team will hold its second scrimmage of the spring on Friday at 3 p.m.
