Football Wraps Up Spring Practice
April 4, 2002 BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Samford University concluded its spring football practice on Thursday as the Bulldogs prepare to kick off the Bill Gray era of Bulldog football next Fall. The Bulldogs worked in full pads for nearly two hours, running through situational packages that included third-and-long situations to held bring along a young and inexperienced offensive line. Gray got a good look at some of Samford's younger players and paid attention as some veteran Bulldogs served notice that they're ready for the 2002 season. The Bulldogs entered spring practice with the goal of becoming a more aggressive team, and Gray said his defensive unit made great strides toward that end. In fact, Gray singled out several defensive players who made impressions in their last practice, including linebackers Derrick Wheeler and Matthew Forester and defensive linemen Thad Henderson and Darold Williams. "Today Matthew Forester had a good practice and he's a guy that we need to be ready to play in his final season," Gray said. "Also at linebacker, Derrick Wheeler continues to show what a tremendous player he can be. Plus, we need about five more Than Hendersons, because he just continues to improve as a freshman and plays bigger and bigger up front. Darold has also had a great spring and he will be a vital player along the front next season."
Offensively, Samford exits spring practice deepest at receiver, with concerns lingering about its offensive line. The Bulldogs will enter Fall practice with their young quarterback Ramon Nelson as No. 1 and veteran Josh Kellett at backup, along with their Division I-AA All-Independent receiver Aryvia Holmes to lead the way. Samford kept things simplified offensively during spring drills, while adding additional packages to its high-powered offense that helped win four of its last five games in 2001.
