BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford football team practiced for two hours in shells Wednesday afternoon at Seibert Stadium.

"I was pleased with what we did today," Samford head coach Bill Gray said. "We needed to go in shells to get our legs back under us a little. We are working, hopefully toward another scrimmage later in the week."

Gray said he has seen some good things on both sides of the ball so far this spring.

"We are doing some different things offensively that we think will make us better, and we are seeing that progress throughout the week," Gray said. "Individually, we have guys like Graham Lemmond, Tommy Smith and Colby Hooper who have impressed us and done a steady job. Jeff Moore had a pretty good day today as well. Jonathan Lowery and Burton Elrod have also done a nice job for us."

"Defensively, we have some guys we overlook sometimes that come out here and give us great effort," Gray said. "Houston Holmes is a guy who understands his role, and he works hard every day to get better at it. I think Quinton Smith has really done well the last couple of days as well."

Samford is scheduled to hold its final spring scrimmage Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. at Seibert Stadium.
