Football Drops 42-21 Decision At Tennessee Tech

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - The Samford football team fell behind, 21-7, in the first quarter, and could not catch up as the Bulldogs fell, 42-21 at Tennessee Tech Saturday afternoon. "You can't have the number of turnovers we did and expect to win," Samford head coach Bill Gray said. "They are a well-coached team. We will continue to look for positives, but this one stings. Hopefully we can learn from it and get better as a team." The Bulldogs commited five turnovers in the loss. For Samford, Jefferson Adcock completed 14-of-27 passes for 220 yards and two touchdowns. Jeff Moore caught six passes for 113 yards and a touchdown. Tennessee Tech was led by Anthony Ash, rushing 20 times for 105 yards and three touchdowns. Cameron Kirnes rushed 16 times for 102 yards and a score. Samford (5-5, 4-3 OVC) scored on its first possession of the game when Adcock hit David Lee on a 14-yard touchdown with 10:05 to go in the first quarter. Shannon Fleming's PAT gave Samford a 7-0 lead. Tennessee Tech (3-6, 2-5 OVC) came back to tie the score when Ash scored on a two-yard run. The score was set up when Tech recovered a fumbled punt at the Samford two-yard line. Josh Foster kicked the PAT to tie the game at 7-7 with 4:36 to go in the first quarter. On the next play from scrimmage, Greg Rolfes picked off an Adcock pass and returned it 23 yards for a score. Foster's PAT gave the Golden Eagles a 14-7 lead with 4:27 to go in the first quarter. On the final play of the first quarter, Tech's Stephen Britton hit Larry Shipp for a 29-yard touchdown. Foster's extra point pushed the Golden Eagles' lead to 21-7. Adcock hit Moore for a 30-yard touchdown with 9:12 to go in the second quarter. Fleming added the PAT to cut Tennessee Tech's lead to 21-14. Tech's Ash scored his second touchdown of the game on a 10-yard run with 4:57 to go before halftime. Foster's extra point made the score 28-14.
Tennessee Tech struck first in the second half when Kirnes scored on a 20-yard run to cap the Golden Eagles' first possession of the half. Foster added the PAT to push Tech's lead to 35-14. Samford's Adrian Bradley scored on a one-yard run with 5:22 to go in the third quarter, and the PAT cut the TTU lead to 35-21. Ash added a third touchdown, this time from 14 yards out with 3:10 to go to make the final score 42-21. Samford will wrap up the 2005 regular season when it plays host to rival Jacksonville State on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 12:00 p.m. at Seibert Stadium.
