NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Samford football team dropped a 29-7 decision at Ohio Valley Conference co-leader Tennessee State Saturday night at LP Field.

With the loss, Samford drops to 3-6 overall and 1-5 in the Ohio Valley Conference. Tennessee State improves to 5-3 overall and 4-0 in conference play.

Alex Mortensen threw Samford's lone touchdown pass. He completed 5-of-8 passes for 47 yards. Jefferson Adcock completed 6-of-10 passes for 49 yards, while Dante Williams was good on 4-of-11 passes for 27 yards.

For Tennessee State, Javarris Williams rushed for 162 yards. Quarterback Antonio Heffner rushed for a career-high three touchdowns.

Tennessee State took the opening kickoff and drove deep into Samford territory, but Quinton Griffin blocked a Tennessee State field goal to keep TSU off the scoreboard early.

TSU struck first when Heffner scored on a one-yard run with 12:10 to go in the second quarter. Eric Benson added the extra point to give the Tigers a 7-0 lead. The Tigers scored again on a one-yard run by Heffner with 5:51 to go in the second quarter. Benson's PAT was no good to make the score 13-0.

Heffner rushed for another touchdown, this one from one yard out with 7:09 left in the third quarter. Benson's PAT gave the Tigers a 20-0 lead. Tennessee State added a safety when Adcock was called for intentional grounding in the end zone with 5:24 to go in the third quarter to make the score 22-0.

Samford got on the scoreboard when Mortensen hit Josh Brennard on a three-yard touchdown with 6:25 to go in the game. Shannon Fleming added the extra point to cut TSU's lead to 22-7. TSU added a late touchdown run by Julian Sample to make the final score 29-7.

 

 

Samford will return home Nov. 4 to play host to the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles. The game, scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff from Seibert Stadium, is Samford's final home game of the 2006 season.
