Kent Laster begins his first season as wide receivers coach for Samford.

Laster came to Samford from Southwest Texas State where he held several positions, including secondary coach, running backs coach and special teams coach from 2001 to 2002, where he coached Southland Conference’s second-leading rusher. He also assisted in recruiting.

He is a 1998 graduate of Southwest Texas State, where he lettered four seasons as a cornerback and won the team’s Best Conditioned Athlete Award in 1997. Laster led the team in interceptions as a sophomore in 1995. He also was selected Honorable Mention All-Southland Conference as a sophomore.

Laster began his coaching career as an assistant at Ouachita Baptist University in 1999. During two seasons at Ouachita Baptist, he coached running backs and assisted in recruitment. He also worked as an academic adviser.

A native of Dallas, Texas, and a graduate of Lake Highlands High School, he earned a B.S. in applied sociology from Southwest Texas State in 1998. He also holds an M.L.A. in history from Henderson State in 2002. Laster, 27, is single.
