David Armstrong enters his third season as quarterbacks and running backs coach for Samford. Last season, Armstrong coached quarterback Ray Nelson, who had a Samford record 3,140 yards of total offense.

Armstrong came to Samford in 2002 after helping lead Copiah Lincoln Community College to its first winning season in several years in 2001. He was the offensive coordinator and academic coach for the Wolves. Copiah Lincoln started the season 4-0 and was ranked as high as 13th nationally.

Before going to Copiah Lincoln, Armstrong spent two seasons as the offensive coordinator and academic coordinator at North Greenville College in Tigerville, S.C. While at North Greenville, he helped the Crusaders to a third-place finish in the Mid-South Conference and an invitation to the KWTO Bowl, the school's first-ever postseason invitation. That season, he was selected as the offensive coordinator for the NAIA National College All-Star game.

Armstrong began his coaching career as a graduate assistant coach from 1989 to 1990 at Northeast Louisiana University, now Louisiana-Monroe. The Indians won the Southland Conference title in 1990. At ULM, Armstrong coached quarterbacks, including NFL quarterback Doug Pederson, and running backs, including former NFL running back Roosevelt Potts. Pederson set three NCAA I-AA passing records under Armstrong's watch, while Potts set a new NLU record with five consecutive 100-yard games in his freshman season.

After NLU, Armstrong spent five seasons (1992-96) at Austin Peay in Clarksville, Tenn., serving as outside linebackers coach, quarterbacks and fullbacks coach, and recruiting coordinator. In 1994, Austin Peay's offense set a school record with 3,408 yards rushing, which was sixth in the nation. The Governors also finished with the second-best passing offense in APSU history during Armstrong's stint.

Armstrong lettered four years at Western Kentucky, where he quarterbacked the 1988 Hilltopper team to a 9-4 record and quarterfinals of the NCAA I-AA playoffs. He received a B.A. in speech communication in 1989. He earned a master's degree in health and physical education in December 1992 from APSU.

A native of Brentwood, Tenn. and a graduate of Brentwood High School, Armstrong is married to the former Michelle Maxwell. They have three children: David, Jr. (nine), Andrew (six) and Isaac (three).
