Samford (1-1, 0-0 Atlantic Sun) TIPOFF: Wednesday Nov. 27, 2002 2 p.m. Seibert Hall, Birmingham, Ala. SAMFORD: Red-shirt freshman J. Robert Merritt scored a career-high 15 points to lead four Samford players in double-figures as the Bulldogs evened their record at 1-1 with a 70-61 victory over Arkansas State on Monday. Tyson Dorsey is third in the Atlantic Sun Conference averaging 20 points per game over the first two games. Phillip Ramelli has also been in double figures in each of the first two games. Only two games into the regular season, but Cornell Felton is averaging six assists per game, the Samford record is 5.4 assists per game set by Al Walter in 1975-76 and Ramelli is leading the conference shooting 83 percent from he floor. The Samford record for best FG percentage is 60.5 percent by Randy Morgan in 1974-75. Last season the Bulldogs shot just 70 percent from the free throw line. In its first two games, Samford is shooting 77 percent from the line. Four players are shooting over 85 percent from the line. NORTH GEORGIA: The Saints are 3-3 on the season coming off a 99-61 victory over Indiana University-NW. Mark Causey, a transfer from Duke, scored a game-high 23 points to lead four Saints in double figures. Kendrick Johnson has been North Georgia's leading scorer in four of its six games. He leads the team averaging 19.7 points per game. Causey is next at 16.2 and Maurice Simon averages 10.2 points per game. The Saints are averaging 82 points as a team over six games. North Georgia won the Brewton-Parker College Tournament by defeating Webber College and Morris College earlier in the year. They have dropped two games to Berry College and one to Dillard University. Today is the first of three-straight games against Div. I opponents. The Saints will face Georgia Southern and South Alabama in the upcoming week. INSIDE STUFF: Samford has won all four previous meetings by an average score of 77-51 against the Saints. Samford won the last meeting 92-35 at Seibert Hall on Dec. 18, 1999. All four previous games have been played in Birmingham. This is final home game of the 2002 calendar year for Samford. The Bulldogs will spend all of December on the road before returning home to open Atlantic Sun Conference play on Jan. 4, against Belmont.
