TIPOFF: Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, 7 p.m. Seibert Hall; Birmingham, Ala. AIR: The game can be heard on WVSU 91.1-FM and the internet at www.samfordsports.com. SAMFORD: Samford enters Thursday's game in fourth place in the Atlantic Sun North trailing Jacksonville State by one game for third place. The Bulldogs currently hold the eighth and final Tournament spot. Samford leads the A-Sun and ranks 21st nationally in FT shooting at 75.0%. The single-season Samford record is 75.9% set during the 1995-96 season. Phillip Ramelli leads Samford averaging 10.9 points and 4.9 rebounds per game. Ramelli is 5th in the A-Sun in FG percentage at 58 percent. Samford leads the Atlantic Sun in all three shooting categories, field goal percentage, free throw percentage, and three-point percentage. The Bulldogs are 6-0 when it shoots 50 percent or above in a game and is 2-12 when shooting less than 50 percent from the floor. STETSON: The Hatters began the season 1-11 but have won three of their last six and have a 2-1 mark against teams in the A-Sun North defeating Campbell and Gardner-Webb. Alexis McMillan leads the team in scoring averaging 13.7 ppg. E.J. Gordon scored 22 points against Georgia State in a 78-71 loss to move his average to 12.2 ppg. The Hatters leading rebounder Mark Stiles is injured and will not play. Scoring has not been Stetson's problem this season. The Hatters average also 70 points per game however opponents are averaging 77.9 pts and are shooting 49.3% against them. Stetson is last in field goal percentage and three point percentage but lead the conference in steals per game, averaging 11.2 steals per contest. The Hatters are 0-7 on the road this season. INSIDE STUFF: The Bulldogs have won the last nine meetings against Stetson but still trail in the overall series 28-15. The Hatters defeated Samford 14 straight times from 1981-1992; however, Stetson's last win in the series was on Feb. 20, 1995 90-80 in Birmingham. Each team has won nine of the 18 games played in Birmingham. The first meeting in the series was a 30-18 Stetson victory in Deland on Feb. 4, 1931.
NEXT: The Bulldogs conclude their brief home stand against Jacksonville on Saturday at 2 p.m. The Dolphins lead the all time series 7-6. Samford swept last year's meetings.
