Big Second Half Lifts Bulldogs Past Campbell, 69-55

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Chris Weaver scored 22 points to lead three Bulldogs in double figures and Samford shot 68 percent from the field in the second half to defeat Campbell 69-55 in Atlantic Sun Conference basketball on Thursday. Weaver made six of his nine shots in the second half, including five of eight three pointers, to help Samford (10-7, 7-2 A-Sun) remain atop the Atlantic Sun Conference standings. After trailing 25-24 at halftime, Campbell (4-12, 2-7 A-Sun) took its only lead of the game, 34-33, at the 14:36 mark of the second half on a basket by Emory Walton. The Bulldogs responded with a 16-5 run to lead 49-39, then a pair of Weaver free throws extended their lead to 61-44 with 4:21 left in the game. Campbell got no closer than 10, as Samford outscored the Camels 44-31 in the second half. Corey Green scored 16 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds while Cornell Felton added 12 points and dished out a team-high six assists for the Bulldogs. Jonte' Edwards and Tarick Johnson each scored 15 points and Dominique Klein had a team-high six rebounds for Campbell. Samford finished the game shooting 51 percent from the field, Campbell shot 46 percent from the field, but Samford also outshot the Camels from the three-point line, 46 percent to Campbell's 36 percent. The Bulldogs recorded 22 assists to only seven turnovers, marking only the third time this season that Samford finished a game with less than 10 turnovers. Campbell recorded 10 assists to 10 turnovers. The Bulldog bench contributed 14 points in the win, led by Eddie Harper's nine points and five rebounds. Bryan Boerjan played 24 minutes to spell a flu-weakened Phillip Ramelli, scoring two points and grabbing three rebounds. Tyson Dorsey knocked down a three-pointer in his 14 minutes. Sebastian Sachse, starting for the first time since injuring his ankle on Nov. 29, scored five points, grabbed two rebounds and dished out three assists. Ramelli had three assists and a rebound in 14 minutes and did not score.
Samford returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 19, hosting Georgia State at 2 p.m. at Seibert Hall.
