BULLDOGS FALL TO WISCONSIN-GREEN BAY, FACE NORTHERN IOWA ON SATURDAY

GREEN BAY, Wisc. - Wisconsin-Green Bay hit eight consecutive free throws in the last minute and outscored Samford 11-4 in the last three minutes to defeat the Bulldogs 53-48 in the Oneida Bingo and Casino Classic at Brown County Arena Friday. Samford (3-7), who led 22-19 at the half, led Wisconsin-Green Bay (5-7) 44-42 after a three-pointer by Derrick Jones with just over three minutes to play in the game. But Samford would not score again until 20 seconds remained in the game, while UWGB's Greg Monfre scored a basket and was fouled to set the Phoenix on a run that saw them score eight consecutive points on free throws. UWGB's defense forced the Bulldogs into 14 turnovers, and Samford finished the game shooting 26 percent from the three-point line. Jones led the Bulldogs with 17 points, and was the only Samford player to score in double figures. Bulldogs leading scorer Marc Salyers was held to seven points for the second time this season, but Samford got scoring from other sources. Chris Weaver and Cornell Felton also scored seven, Sebastian Sachse added six and Corey Green scored four. Monfre and Chancellor Collins scored 12 for the Phoenix and Mike King added 10 to give Green Bay three players in double digits.
Methodical offense, cool shooting touches and solid defense led to a low scoring 22-19 Samford first half lead in the second game of the tournament. Derrick Jones led the Bulldogs in the first period with seven points on three-of-seven shooting, but Samford shot only 38 percent from the field, including 4-of-13 from the three-point arc. Leading scorer Marc Salyers was the recipient of double-teams most of the evening, his only points of the first half coming on an alley-oop dunk at the 14-minute mark. Junior Chris Weaver and sophomore Cornell Felton each added five points and Sebastian Sachse added a three pointer for the Bulldogs in the first half. Defensively Samford forced Wisconsin-Green Bay into 28 percent shooting from the field and the Phoenix did not attempt one three-pointer in the first half.
