MACON, Ga. (AP) - Playing in his final home game, Mercer senior Rodney Kirtz scored 22 points and passed 1,000 career points as the Bears beat Samford 72-60 Saturday night.

Needing 16 points to reach the milestone, Kirtz hit a 17-foot jumper at the end of the first half to hit the 1,000 mark. He finished with 1,006 career points.

Mercer (13-14, 10-8 Trans America Athletic Conference) never trailed against Samford (14-13, 11-7) and had a lead as big as 16 points. Korey McCray added 11 points for the Bears, and Scott Emerson recorded his 20th career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Marc Salyers led the Bulldogs with 16 points before fouling out with just over a minute remaining. Corey Green added 15 points off the bench, and Derrick Jones chipped in with 10.

Samford, now the #5 seed in the TAAC Tournament, gets ready to face #4 seed Jacksonville on March 1 in Atlanta. Game time will be approxiamtely 8:15 (EST).
