BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Junior Chris Weaver's off-balance leaner paused between the backboard and rim and then rolled into the basket to beat the buzzer as Samford defeated UCF 72-71 in overtime in Trans America Athletic Conference basketball Thursday.

Weaver's shot came from inside the three-point arc after Samford rebunded a missed three-point attempt by Derrick Jones with less than five seconds remaining. Weaver finished with 12 points on 5-of-11 shooting and also had a game-high seven assists.

Samford found itself in trouble in the second half for the third straight game, despite controlling the first half and leading 41-28 at halftime. UCF outscored the Bulldogs 33-20 in the second period, as Samford shot only 27 percent in the second half after firing 60 percent in the first. The Golden Knights only shot 38 percent themselves from the field, but forced 20 Bulldog turnovers in their second-half run to force overtime.

Marc Salyers led Samford with his third double-double of the season, scoring 23 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Sebastian Sachse scored 14 and Cornell Felton added 12, including two crucial three-pointers late in the game, to help the Bulldogs escape with a home win. Derrick jones added seven and Corey Green and Phillip Ramelli each scored two points for Samford. Kevin Lee scored 14 points and Paul Reed added 12 for UCF.
