A record crowd of 4,240 and three players in double figures couldn't help Samford claim a stake of first place in the Trans America Athletic Conference Thursday, as Georgia State knocked off Samford 73-62 at Seibert Hall.

Marc Salyers, playing on an injured ankle, scored 16 points to lead Samford (11-9, 8-3 TAAC), while Derrick Jones scored 15 and Chris Weaver added 11 in the Bulldogs' second loss to the Panthers this season. Kevin Morris led all scorers with 24 points, knocking down five of eight three-pointers in the game. Thomas Terrell scored 17 and Darryl Cooper added 13 for the Panthers.

Georgia State shot 7-for-7 from three-point range in the first five minutes of the game, and jumped out to a 9-2 lead with just over a minute and a half elapsed in the opening half. The Panthers led by as many as 10 on two occasions, but Samford cut the lead to one with :34 remaining in the first half. A three-pointer from Kevin Morris with four seconds left gave Georgia State a 39-35 lead at halftime. The Bulldogs closed the gap on GSU several times in the second half, coming to within a basket or tying the game on six occasions before taking their first lead on a three-pointer by Salyers with 5:52 left in the game. The Bulldogs' lead lasted less than a minute, however, as GSU went on a 16-1 run in a four-minute span, taking its largest lead of the game, 68-56, with 1:05 to play.

Jones added nine rebounds to his 15 points, and Samford got six points each from the trio of Sebastian Sachse, Cornell Felton and Corey Green and two points from Gabe Skypala. Samford returns to action on Saturday, hosting Campbell at 2 p.m. at Seibert Hall.
